The Wisconsin Ledge AVA
At Parallel 44 and Door 44 wineries, we take great pride in being the largest and most awarded wine
producer of Wisconsin Ledge Wines. What are “Wisconsin Ledge” Wines?
The Wisconsin Ledge is one of the newest Wine Appellations in America, designated in 2012. A Wine
Appellation is an official federally recognized wine region that is based on our soils, climate, and
topography (also known as “terroir”) that make these wines unlike any other wines in the world.
This designation of an official wine appellation is the same level of national and international
designation that has been given to Napa Valley in California and Bordeaux in France.
When you look on a wine label and it says “Wisconsin Ledge” that means that at least 85% of the grapes
that crafted that bottle are grown within this Wisconsin Ledge AVA. The geographical region which
stretches along the coast of Lake Michigan from Washington Island to just north of Milwaukee.
So, what is it about our terroir that is ideal for grapes? The soil is glacial till soil which provides good
drainage, our proximity to Lake Michigan gives us gentle lake breezes and helps with frost protection in
the Spring and Fall, and our sun exposure and rain fall are similar to those of other famous grapes
growing regions.
You will notice our Wisconsin Ledge wines are very aromatic, crisp, and balanced. They have surprised
judges both nationally and internationally.
When you enjoy Wisconsin Ledge wines you can be among the first 1% of the nation that has ever
experienced them, and you can impress your wine drinking friends with the newest wine expressions in
the world.
All the Best!
