So, What is Good Wine?
Multiple times each day in our tasting rooms we get the question: So what is a good wine? This would seem like a simple answer, however, the answer really lies within each of us. A good wine is subjective and can vary depending on each of our taste preferences. Each of us has a unique pallet and because of that we taste things very differently.
Every grape has its own aromas and flavor profiles which come through when the grape is crafted into wine. How we taste that, however, is personal to us. We often see flavor descriptors on tasting guides and assume that is what we will smell or taste when we sample that wine. Sometimes we do and sometimes we do not. That again is because of our unique pallets. That is why being able to sample a wine makes a difference, because we will have our own interpretation of “if that is a good wine.”
Certainly, there are factors that makes some wines better than others – a good wine is one that is well balanced. In a grape wine the components you have to balance are sugar, acid, alcohol and tannins (in a red). If those components are balanced, then we can all agree it is a “well-made wine.” Whether we like that wine, however, is still a personal evaluation. Again, only by tasting that wine can you personally decide if it is a “good wine.”
Since tasting is the best way to form our own personal evaluation, we invite you to visit our wineries and select a flight of wine of your choice and enjoy the flavor journey it takes you on!
