F² is the result of Winemaker Steve’s belief that blending grape varietals can sometimes lead to a better expression of the grapes. This wine is a 50/50 blend of two grapes grown here on the Wisconsin Ledge– Frontenac and Marechal Foch (also called Foch). When it came time to name this wine, Steve and Maria decided that ‘Frontenac X Foch = ‘F2’, otherwise known
as “F Squared”.

When it comes to red wine, the term “age-ability” often comes up. Age-ability is a desirable characteristic in wine; however not all wines will develop nuance and subtle flavors over time. Both the Frontenac and Foch grape have acidity which is one of the key components needed for a wine to maintain its’ structure or framework over time and allows for the wine’s flavors, color, and mouthfeel to evolve. While many California winemakers would feel intimidated by the high acidities that result from our cold climate varietals, they would yearn for the structure our acidities can provide. As F2 matures, the toast of oak will add an expression of dark chocolate, a common characteristic of an aged wine made with the Frontenac grape.
